This beautifully illustrated book will appeal equally to philatelists and to admirers of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother. The Queen Mother’s Century Celebrated in Stamps features stamps depicting Her Majesty from the first to be issued, by Newfoundland, in August 1932, when she was Duchess of York.
Fascinating portraits of that engaged and committed philatelist, His Majesty King George VI, are included, together with a striking photograph of Princess Elizabeth, looking at one of the stamp albums in the Royal Philatelic Collection, taken at Buckingham Palace in July 1946. There are photographs of The Queen Mother and other members of the Royal Family from which stamps were created, notably some of the masterpiece studies by the distinguished Royal photographer, Tim Graham.
A key source for the stamps has been three omnibus issues by the Crown Agents Stamp Bureau: The Life and Times of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother, 1900-1985; Ninety Glorious Years 1900-1990; and The Queen Mother’s Century issued during 1999. Nigel Fordham, Head of the Crown Agents Stamp Bureau gives a insight into the thinking behind these particular stamps, issued as a tribute to The Queen Mother.
Derek Miller, the international stamp designer, explains the background and rationale behind The Queen Mother’s Century omnibus issue he created. Some of his earlier original drawings and stamp concepts are published here for the first time.
This delightful book has been written and meticulously researched by the well-known collector and philatelic correspondent Peter Jennings, a fellow of the Royal Philatelic Society, London. It includes a complete list of stamps portraying Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother Issued by Great Britain and countries of the Empire, and later by the Commonwealth. There is an introduction by Tim Graham who has been in the forefront of Royal photography for three decades.
