
| With the exception of Chapter I, which contains a resumé of the various earlier attempts to establish a postal service in China, which was to be run along Western lines, and the preparations for the opening of the Imperial Post Office on 2 February 1897, Volume II of Major Pratts magnum opus is limited to events that occurred during the year 1897.
To this end, Chapter II discusses the question as to whether or not China attempted to join the U. P. U. in 1897, and the alternative of partial postal union with Hong Kong. Chapter III describes the postal events in the first month following the opening of Chinas new Imperial Post Office on 2 February 1897, (Chinese New Year). The contents of Chapter IV, consist of comments on the operation of the Shanghai Municipal Post between 2 February to the end of 1897. Chapter V covers postal events affecting the Imperial Post between 1 March 1897, and the end of that year. Chapter VI contains illustrations and descriptions of a range of postal documentation used to support the day to day functioning of the Imperial Post. Chapter VII records the contents of the Postal Secretarys Circulars Nos. 1 to 5. This final chapter VIII records the major events (postally), which affected the operations of the Foreign Post Offices in China during 1897, as far as matters pertaining to the Imperial Post were concerned. |
